Art Panel: Being a Graphic Novelist in Singapore
Join Sean Lam, creator of the acclaimed local horror graphic novel series GEUNGSI, for a candid conversation about building a career as a graphic novelist in Singapore and Asia.
From the origins of GEUNGSI, a unique reimagining of Chinese folklore and hopping vampire mythology, to its evolution into an internationally recognised series, Sean will share the creative influences, research, and personal experiences that shaped the work. The session will explore how cultural heritage, identity, and storytelling intersect within the graphic novel medium, and how creators can develop original voices while drawing from traditional narratives.
Beyond the creative process, Sean will discuss the realities of pursuing graphic novels as a profession in Singapore, including navigating the local market, finding opportunities beyond national borders, balancing artistic vision with commercial sustainability, and adapting to the changing landscape of publishing and independent creation.
Drawing from nearly two decades of experience in the arts and comics scene across Asia, Sean will offer insights into the challenges, setbacks, and lessons learned while bringing long-form graphic storytelling projects to life. Whether you’re an aspiring comic creator, illustrator, writer, or simply curious about the craft, this session provides an honest look at what it takes to sustain a creative practice and build meaningful stories that resonate with readers around the world.
PROFILE
Sean Lam is a Singaporean graphic novelist, writer, and artist whose work spans horror, fantasy, science fiction, and folklore. Over the past two decades, he has built a career telling stories across cultures, publishing works in Singapore and internationally while collaborating with publishers, festivals, and creators around the world. His latest graphic novel is a historical romance set in Singapore in the year 1902, coming out this August.
He is best known for GEUNGSI, the popular Singapore-born horror graphic novel series inspired by Asian folklore and the legendary Chinese hopping vampire. What began as a local supernatural adventure has expanded into a shared universe that stretches from Singapore to Taiwan and Hong Kong through spin-off titles such as Geungsi Kawaii and Geungsi Gangsta.
Sean has also worked on high-profile international projects, including the graphic novel adaptation of Ringworld, based on the classic New York Times bestselling science fiction novel by Larry Niven. In 2012, his graphic novel Judith: Captive to Conqueror received an award at the Angoulême Christian Comics Festival in France.
Beyond comics, Sean is the author of fantasy and horror novels for young adults, exploring themes of identity, belief, culture, and the supernatural. His work often draws from both Asian and Western traditions, blending mythology, faith, and contemporary storytelling into narratives that are action-packed, character-driven, and deeply rooted in human experience.
Whether creating original worlds, adapting beloved classics, or reimagining folklore for modern audiences, Sean remains passionate about the power of stories to connect people across borders, generations, and cultures.

SPEAKERS
“Inspire, and be inspired”
Kevin Yeo a.k.a TR, started like everyone else, in a store staring at rows of model kits. Since then, kit building continues to hold a special place in his life. TR started out as a miniatures painter for tabletop wargaming and slowly pretty much does every genre.
TR’s accolades include Merits awards for Tetsujin 2020, 2021, Judge award for 2023, and Malcom 2023 Bronze in Sci-fi Standard category. And most recently Malcom 2026, Bronze in Sci-fi Standard category then a 2nd prize for the Iron Maiden Category of the recently concluded Tetsujin 2026.
Prefers to use Hand painting and focuses more on creativity, being different than the usual design of the kits and prefers a more cultural/ fantasy approach.
Eric (mari.plamo) is a Singapore-based scale modeller whose fascination with giant robots sparked a lifelong passion for the craft. What began as assembling model kits for enjoyment gradually evolved into a meaningful outlet for creativity, experimentation, and connection with a like-minded community.
Over the years, Eric has participated in both local and international scale modelling events, broadening his perspective through competitions, exhibitions and exchanges with fellow modellers across the region. His recent achievement includes a Gold Medal in the Gunpla Standard Category and a Bronze Medal in the Mecha/Ma.K Category at MALCOM 2026, along with special awards from Verko’s Vault and the Hong Kong International Model Festival.
Eric’s modelling philosophy is grounded in the belief that every piece should carry intention. Beyond technical execution, he sees each model as a chance to tell a story, evoke emotion and reflect personal growth at a particular moment in time. Inspired by traditional art forms and nature, he finds beauty in the tactile expressiveness of brush painting, reminding him to slow down, feel each brushstroke and embrace the imperfections that give a piece its soul.
For Eric, scale modelling is more than an individual pursuit. He actively volunteers at local events to support and uplift a vibrant community built on shared passion, generosity and mutual learning. Whether through competitions, workshops, or informal conversations, he values the connections and perspectives the hobby fosters. He remains committed to growing as an artist while helping to cultivate a welcoming and inspiring modelling culture for others.

Managing Burnout and Returning to Art: Perspectives From Career Artists
Every creator experiences burnout. Every experience of burnout is different. Some creators experience it in a very obvious way, others don’t quite understand why the feeling of creating art is no longer the same until its too late. And some completely, emotionally, and physically crash out, stopping creating art forever. This panel is not meant to offer a solution to every individual’s creative difficulties, more so to openly talk about creator burnout through exploring how the panelists understood their own plight and how they came up with solutions for their own unique circumstances. Hopefully each individual will start to take stock of their creative journey, know which battles to pick so as to not lose valuable brain bandwidth.

I started full time freelancing as illustrator 2 years ago, before that I have been working as a site engineer in a shipyard for 5 years after uni. Drawing has always been part of my life since ~20years back, like how some parents send their children to piano classes, I also got sent to art class.
While I ended up going for engineering in university, my passion in art led me to joining their anime club, meeting new people of similar passion and growing my skill sets. Thanks to that, and after all the series of chain events, I get to be doing this now 10 years later.
From only boothing at local conventions and occasionally having small personal commissions, to now traveling around the world to sell my works and being part of commercial projects that I love.
Yuna is a Spanish illustrator whose work combines American comics and Japanese manga. With over five years of freelance work, he’s taken his art to conventions and creative events across Europe and Asia. With a formal background in both Illustration and Graphic Design, his real drive lies in visual storytelling, creating interesting alternative product from popular series and staying connected to art communities around the globe.
Hey, I’m FeiHai! I’m a full-time freelance illustrator from Indonesia who travels the world exhibiting at conventions—mostly because I love interacting with other people who share the same passion.
I’ve been drawing since I was three years old, originally inspired by the anime and games that made me want to create. Now, with 9 years of professional experience, my style focuses on semi-realism and dramatic, cinematic lighting to create epic scenes.

Yukoring (優子鈴)
Painter / Illustrator
Influenced from early childhood by the pop culture that surrounded her, her work centers on neo-contemporary depictions of young girls, visualized through a uniquely Japanese cultural lens. Emerging from within the illustration culture, she pursues new forms of painting—creating art that is not merely viewed on a screen, but can be “met” in real, physical spaces.
In addition to working extensively on commercial projects for anime, games, and VTubers, she serves as an official ambassador for ARCHES® (France) and Maruzen Art Materials. Through these roles, as well as publishing technique books and hosting workshops, she actively promotes the use of traditional analog art mediums. Her unique technique involves layering transparent watercolors to meticulously construct paths of light, cutting a new path for painterly expression that bridges tradition and modernity.

Artist at Work with Heng Suay EATING HOUSE
My journey as an artist has been shaped by curiosity, persistence, and a desire to create meaningful experiences. Over the years, I have learned that being an artist is not only about producing creative work—it is also about developing a mindset that embraces experimentation, problem-solving, and continuous growth.
One of the most important lessons in my journey has been learning to navigate uncertainty. Creative work often involves taking risks, receiving feedback, and refining ideas through multiple iterations. Rather than viewing challenges as obstacles, I have learned to see them as opportunities to learn and improve.
But what if the company that you’re working for doesn’t embrace that? What if your colleagues don’t have that same attitude towards work?
Ultimately, my artistic and career journey is an ongoing process of exploration and growth. It is about combining creativity with professionalism, embracing change, and using art as a way to connect, communicate, and make a meaningful impact.
PROFILE
My name is Shannon, Director of Heng Suay Eating House. I’m an artist by trade and have built a career around creating props, puppets and costumes for immersive experiences like theme parks and live shows.
